South Gate is a small town in the San Gabriel Valley of Los Angeles County, California. It was founded in 1887 by Captain John W. Humphreys and his family as a station on the Santa Fe Railroad. The townsite was named for South Gate Canyon, east of which Humphrey's ranch lay. Gun protection history in South Gate began with the first shooting at South Gate Canyon on October 6, 1887. That day, three men were shot at close range near the junction of G Street and Canoga Avenue in what is now known as ZIP Code 91793. Humphreys and Samuel Fenton, both of whom lived in nearby Agoura Hills at the time. The first shooting at South Gate Canyon took place less than a year later on October 26, 1888 when two men were killed and six others injured after being hit by gunfire from an unknown person during a robbery near North Park Boulevard and Lankershim Boulevard in present-day SouthGate Center neighborhood (now ZIP Code 91792). This new development would become Hollywood City Limits which included much of what is now Los Angeles County except for parts of Pasadena and Westwood Village along Brentwood Drive north of Ventura Boulevard (now I-5), including most of what is now south Central Los Angeles neighborhoods like Boyle Heights, Echo Park and Watts streets downtown while also incorporating some rural areas around Redondo Beach into Hollywood City Limits proper until annexation by Burbank occurred following World War II; see History of Hollywood City Limits . In addition toHollywood City Limits partaking primarily business activities there was also an area called Vinegar Hill renamed Highland Oaks annexed from nearby Downey Beach ; see History of Downey Beach . By 1895 Highland Oaks had 2 churches – First Methodist Episcopal Church located where Vinegar Hill Road intersects Highland Oaks Boulevard today (and still uses this name) while Second Presbyterian Church was built on down street Olive Branch Avenue opposite First Methodist Episcopal Church although its location has changed several times over its history too . According to historian Hendrik Hertzog this change may have been due to anti-Catholic sentiment surfacing among many residents newly transplanted into large cities during this period although first Presbyterian Churches did manage to maintain congregation outside Southern California until circa 1920 when it relocated back inside Highland Oaks .Today there are only traces remainingof both original churches sites: Pfeiffer Chapel located off Vinegar Hill Rd east side across from #1First Methodist Episcopal Chcb & main highway intersection w/Highland Oaks Blvd., since demolished & replaced w/new building sometime between 1903-1904 (EQ Historic Site#6);Original Scotchman's Schoolhouse located just northeast corner Of Vinegar Hill Rd & Olive Branch Ave w/Second Presbyterian Church—since razed (& replaced) w/ newer structure sometime between 1903-1904 (EQ Historic Site#7) , latter site serving as minor league baseball stadium under various names thruout ensuing decades.—(See map below .)
