South San Francisco was founded by the Spanish in 1795 as part of Alta California. It became a Mexican town in 1821 and an American settlement in 1846. The city was founded on the site of modern-day South San Francisco School, now known as USF Sonoma State University. The first permanent residents were Mission Indians who arrived from Mexico City in 1795. In 1821, the Mexican government ceded portions of Alta California to the United States, including South San Francisco. The Americans built their first homes on Rancho Rinconada, which is now located near Market Street and First Avenue. During the Mexican War (1846-48), South San Francisco sided with the United States over Mexico. After Mexico's defeat, Texas took control of Alta California and appointed General Antonio López de Santa Anna as governor of Californias new territory. Santa Anna ordered Los Angeles to be sacked by artillery fire in order to quash any resistance against his rule – this event is sometimes called La Guerra de las Pinturas (The War of paintings). In 1850, South San Francisco became part of newly formed Los Angeles County and remained an Anglo-American community until 1908 when it reverted back to Spanish culture under Coronado’s administration as part of a land grant given to José Nieto de la Rúa y Hurtado de Mendoza from Spain for $2 million (). In 1914, after World War I began, Southern California transitioned from a Republican into a Democratic state due to strong opposition within Southern California's Anglo majority contingent led by Mayor William Mulholland and Supervisor Charles Gleason. As promised during Mulholland's campaign trail stop at South San Francisco High School on November 15th 1914,[1] all streetlights were turned off throughout downtown while he delivered his speech; however this event never happened because city lights continued functioning until 1948 when they were replaced by sodium lamps due to cost overruns associated with WWII.[2][3][4] After years living beneath kerosene lamps operated by hand candles or kerosene lanterns at night,[5] citizens finally had electricity through electric lights installed circa 1947 following WWII[6][7]. With advancements in technology over the years such as television production facilities set up in DowntownSouthSanFrancisco during late 1960s TVs shows occasionally started wildfires etc., municipal leaders decided that streetlights should also be replaced beginning around 1970 having long advocated for this change[8][9].Since then most recent Streetlight replacements have been LED without filament similar light sources used today especially along public transportation corridors such as Market St & Polk St corridor
The first European to set foot in South San Francisco was Alonso de la Hoz on July 24, 1769. The area now occupied by the city of South San Francisco was part of Spanish territory at the time. The first permanent European residents were Mexican settlers who arrived in 1821. In 1846, the United States acquired California from Spain and renamed it California. The city of South San Francisco became a part of the new state and continued to serve as its capital until 1861. During World War II, South San Francisco played an important role as a naval base. From 1942 to 1945, it served as site of Japan's largest airbase during World War II. After the war, the city experienced rapid growth and development due to its importance as a industrial center and node for transportation within California and beyond. In recent decades, South San Francisco has been home to some high-profile cultural events such as ART+SNOE: Art & Science on Market Street which brings together artists from around Northern California for two weeks each year; and the biennial Bay Area Music Festival which features more than 100 acts over six days in late September or early October.
