Stockton, California is a city in San Joaquin County, California, United States. The population was 81,183 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in San Joaquin County and the second-largest city in Northern California. The first permanent settler in what would become Stockton was James Fenton who arrived on July 4, 1847. He named his land "Fenton's Ranch" after himself and his brother John Fenton. A year later, another Englishman by the name of David Henshall claimed part of Rancho Rinconcito which led to conflict between Henshall and Fenton over control of this land. In 1850, when both men were living in Sacramento County, they sold their portions of Rancho Rinconcito to Isaac Lodge for $5 per acre ($40 total). In 1851 George Ellis purchased an addition to Rancho Rinconcito from Isaac Lodge for $10 per acre ($60 total). This purchase added 2 million acres (8 square miles) of land to San Joaquin County making it one of the largest purchases in county history. By 1870, almost all of present day Stockton had been developed as a result of these early stakesouts including much of downtown along Richards Bayou with its rich agricultural soil that supported such diverse crops as cotton, hay, oats & potatoes; watermelons; tomatoes; pumpkins; beans; chilies etc.. During World War I some sections within town were designated as military zones due to shortage or lack thereof available housing elsewhere within town limits: In 1918 Zone 3 became Zone 5 with 1st Battalion U S Marines stationed there until 1945 whileZone 4 reverted back to civilian rule after hostilities ended When American troops arrived at Camp Blanding during World War II they found an abandoned munitions plant just outside town limits which became known as "The Plant". As war progressed resources dwindled so did employment opportunities for locals so progress was slow until 1946 when a new company complex called Camp Blanding Ammunition Works was built next door on White Sands Boulevard across from what is now Chico State University . After years of struggles by local citizens & businessesSanta Clara Valley Water District reached an agreement with Southern Pacific Railroad Company Limited (SPRCL) to build a pipeline beneath Richards Bayou which created numerous jobs throughout the area
