By 1853, there were severalgunsmiths in town who made and repaired firearms. In 1897, a company called the National Firearms Company was founded in Stockton by Augustus De Morgan and John Browning. The company manufactured handguns and rifle stocks. In 1907, the National Firearms Company merged with another company, Winchester Arms Co., to become Winchester Repeating Arms Co. In 1928, Winchester Repeating Arms Co. merged with Colt Corporation to form Colt-Waite & Steyr Incorporated. Colt-Waite & Steyr Incorporated produced revolvers and rifles until it changed its name to Colt Machine Guns Corporation in 1945. In the 1930s and 1940s, Gunstocks became popular among soldiers during World War II because they could be easily carried around without being attached to a belt or holster. Many people also started using gunstocks as an art form because they could create unique designs for their gunsidesponsorships ornaments or other accessories (e.g., swords). Gunstocks continued to be popular throughout the postwar period until they were replaced by more modern mechanisms such as triggersights and safety systems in the 1960s and 1970s.

On January 14, 1850, part of Rancho San Pablo north of present-day Stockton was alienation land to John Cale for $2 per acre (0·10 per sq km). In 1851–1852 James Waddell Bartholin surveyed lots for an east-west railroad line that became known as the Pacific Railroad; he named it the SSJ&A Railway Company after José Canoga’s ranchoSan Pablo north of town On May 24 1860 Frederick Law Olmsted purchased 8 square miles (20 square km) within what are now downtown Stockton from Anthony Wolcott for $10 per acre (240 ha/sq km). Olmsted named it New Townsquare because he wanted a new center for Modesto where all merchants would be located so that they could compete with each other and better serve their customers. The first post office opened in New Townsquare on October 15 1861 under the name Post Office Square (later renamed Union Square), which lasted until 1911 when it moved to its current location south of Main Street near Interstate 80 just east of Olive Avenue In 1865 Calvert Vaux designed and built two small brick buildings at First and Mission Streets for use as City Hall and Jail respectively – these were replaced by City Hall Annexes three years later In 1872 Southern Pacific Railroad extended its line from Menlo Park south through San Jose into Santa Clara County On February 14 1873 Henry Durant bought 10 acres (40 ha) northeast of present-day downtown Stockton from George Eastman for $1 per acre (0·30 sq km). Durant renamed it Sacramento Peak because Sacramento Valley lay below him on his property . Upon purchase he began construction on what would become Capitol Hillou

A new town site was chosen because it had abundant water supplies and would be able to support a large population due to its location adjacent to two major rivers-the Sacramento and Delta systems. The new town site included land that would eventually become downtown Stockton and much of north central San Joaquin Valley
Stockton was founded in 1849 as a small town on the banks of the Sacramento River. The town grew rapidly and by 1861 it had reached its current size. In 1865, Stockton became an incorporated city. In 1907, Stockton was renamed to its current name.
