With gold discovered in nearby Shasta County in 1859, interest among miners intensified here in search for some Oficiales (eager young entrepreneurs) led by José Ramón Becerra y Valdés who organized an expedition known as la Torre Blanca or "the White Tower" because its first discovery was reported from atop an white tower located on Topanga Creek about seven miles northeast of present day Stockton. In 1863 Anthony Cady discovered oil while exploring for silver near today's Monterrey; this led to increased development around Oil Field #2 west of town beginning around 1865 when James Wickersham took over management from Cady and developed it into what is now Midstream Partnerships, Inc., one of America's leading oilfield services companies owning interests across more than 60 energy exploration and production fields worldwide including 25% stake in Anadarko Petroleum Company

Stockton, California was founded on October 24, 1848 by the brothers Jedediah and David Stockton. The city became a port of entry for immigrants seeking to find their way westward. The town was named after Joaquin Miller, an American scout who had explored the region in 1836. The first post office opened in Stockton on December 1, 1848. By 1860, the population of Stockton had reached 10,000 residents. In 1863, the United States Postal Service established a mail route from Sacramento through Stockton to Reno. In 1865, the California Legislature passed a bill creating the State of Nevada and giving it land east of the Sierra Nevada mountain range as its capital. Governor George C. Goodwin signed this legislation into law on February 14th. This event marked the beginning of what would be known as Northern Nevada's growth as a separate state within California. Over time, other towns were annexed to Stockton including Bakersfield (1890), Hollister (1913), Lodi (1928), Bishop (1981) and finally Daly City in 1990. The city experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location at the mouth of San Francisco Bay and its ability to ship goods and materials upriver for military use during wartime shortages elsewhere in California
