It is located on the north bank of the San Joaquin River and is adjacent to Stockton Ports Authority and downtown Stockton. The first permanent settlement in what would become Stockton was made on October 2, 1847 by John Sutter and his party of American Indians under the leadership of Chief Joseph. At first called Fort Yuma by the native people, it became known as Stockton after British explorer Capt. George Anthony Stockett explored the area in 1846-47 while exploring northwest California for United States Exploring Expedition No. 7. In 1848, following Mexican independence from Spain, Mexico ceded parts of northern California to America at an event known as "the Cession of Alta California." On February 14, 1850, President James K. Polk signed legislation creating Contra Costa County based on land grants received from Mexican governor Manuel Micheltorena. The City of Sacramento was founded just south of present-day Stockton on August 16th,1851 by combining portions of several smaller communities including Colusa (now part of Fremont), Diablo (now part of Newark), anditty Oak Flat Creek (now part of Santa Clara). On November 3rd 1850 Samuel Freeman opened the first post office in what would become Stockton when he purchased three pieces of property from Captain George Anthony stocking Company H Rancho de la Mesa del Rey near present day Marengo Boulevard and Main Street in today's DowntownStockton for $4 per acre only 4 years later on December 12th 1850! This early mail service established a connection between Los Angeles and San Francisco which continued until 1862 with arrives via boat through Donner Pass In 1855 Google Earth Images were created showing that there are now over 500 properties within 5 miles or so around what would become Stockton with modern day street names reflecting this growth such as Marengo Boulevard/DowntownStockTON renamed Donner Highway in honor both General Ulysses S Grant who fought at Buena Vista during the Civil Warand immigrants who came to America starting with Mission Dolores arriving here in 1853 & eventually becoming oneof America's most powerful businesswomen
