Stockton is a city in Contra Costa County, California, United States. The population was 97,711 at the 2010 census. It is the 9th most populous city in California and 8th most populous city in Northern California. Stockton has been called "the Gateway to the Silicon Valley" for its role as an early center of computer technology development and its position as a major gateway into the San Joaquin Valley. The first known permanent settlement in what is now Stockton was made up of Native American traders and their families who arrived during the late 17th century from what is now Oregon. In 1851, after gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill, settlers began flowing into Stockton from all over northern California seeking new land to mine. The town site was selected because it had a deepwater harbor and good transportation links with other parts ofCaliforny and elsewhere on the west coast. The first post office opened in 1853, and by 1860, there were over 100 residents living in town. By 1870, when statehood was granted to California, Stockton had become one of the largest cities in California with a population of over 250 people. Over time, growth continued unabated; by 1920 it had reached 1,500 people per square mile (600/km²). However, job opportunities within the rapidly expanding metropolis led to social tension that would persist until well into the 21st century. This mill continued until 1918 when it closed due to lack of demand for wood products outside North America and its closure has been cited as one reason why prices for logs have surged over recent decades In 1907 photographer Edward Munch made an opportunistic trip downriver from Sacramento to photograph rapids along the way en route back upriver; these photos later became known as Munch Falls The City Council proclaimed December 12th 1909 “Happenings day” in honor of Munch’s visit On October 15th 1912 Alice Paul organized a women’s rights convention at City Hall which led eventually to passage of Proposition 8 (the state constitutional amendment banning marriage between men and women) within months After World War II ended hostilities ceased all trade with Japan; however post-war restrictions on industry severely limited economic growth which negatively affected many aspects including housing stock .
