When Stockton, California was founded in 1849, it was the capital of the newly organized San Joaquin Valley. The valley was sparsely populated and lacked any natural resources so merchants and farmers turned to cattle and goldmining to make a living. One of these men was James Wickersham, who traveled through the area in search of new land to ranch and mine. When he discovered the fertile red soil of the San Joaquin Valley, Wickersham decided to settle there. In 1855, he founded the town of Stockton on what is now Main Street. At first, Wickersham only rented land for his followers but as time passed he started to build himself a small community with his own family. By 1870, when Sacramento became the state capital, Wickersham had built a brick building on what is now First Avenue in Stockton which served as both his home and business until his death in 1902. Wickerham's son-in-law George Eastman developed a successful cattle industry in Stockton which helped support Wickerham's community growth. Eastman also started up several businesses including an insurance company and a flour mill that still operate today. In 1907, Eastman donated land to downtownStockton which became known as Eastern Plaza. Over time, other business owners established themselves at this location such as A&P grocery store (now known as Amazon), Sears & Roebuck department store (now Kmart), and finally The City Hall (now City Hall Park). Due to its strategic location within downtownStocktonand its many businesses located near each other - Stockton quickly emerged as one of California's most important cities! During World War II, Stockton played an important role both domestically and abroad due to its access to raw materials necessary for war production such as oil refineries and aircraft factories. For example, during WW2 an ammunition plant was built onsite which produced over 1 million rounds of ammo per day! Additionally, several major defense contractors were located in or around Stockton including Raytheon Company (later Lockheed Martin) which manufactured radar equipment; Northrop Corporation (later Northrop Grumman) which manufactured fighter planes; Boeing Company (later Boeing Aircraft) which made bombers; Kaiser Aluminum Works Incorporated (later Kaiser Permanente)which produced aluminum cans etc.; ITT Corporation (later Intel)which manufactured computers; Emerson Electric Company( later Emerson Electric Co.)which manufactures transformers etc.; US Departmentof Laborwhose headquarters were located at 5th & Union Streets in downtownStockTON). Despite all these companies having their offices miles away from each other - they managed to work together perfectly during wartime! Since then, Stockton has seen some great changes throughout its history including becoming one of the most diverse cities in California with over 100 languages spoken fluently here; becoming home to several universities including UC Davis Medical School/Department of Medicine & Health Sciences; becoming internationally renowned for its Manufacturing industry with companies like AMD Internationals Limited manufacturing graphics cards etc.; experiencing rapid growth dueinos population explosion from single digits back into double digits over recent decades; hosting numerous events throughout the year such as Oktoberfestivals Beer Festival etc.; being designated "City Of Culture" by Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa earlier this year - evidence that even after centuries of growth & change - Stockon remains an active cultural center capable of retaining its vitality well into the future!

After searching through several locations within Kern County, he settled on what is now Midtown between First Street (now Walnut) Avenue and Central Avenue (now Market Street). Brougham's choice was based on many factors - including access to water supplies essential for agriculture, railroads stretching into nearby Fresno County for shipment goods,.and prospects for becoming an important commercial center due to its location near major migration routes from eastward across Southern California
