Agricultural land was purchased by John Sutter from the original Mexican settlers who had settled in Rancho San José de Atzalan around 1800. Sutter began developing this land into what would become Sunnyvale after selling it to his brother-in-law George Wickersham in 1842 for £4 per acre ($10 per square kilometer). Wickersham named his new village at least partially after himself – Wigginsville – although no evidence suggests he ever visited or lived there. A year later Wickersham sold his interest in the village to businessman Hyrum Mears for $2 per acre ($4 per square kilometer). Mears renamed it Willow Vale after one of his children's nursery rhymes about trees that are watered by willow leaves (Willow vale being British slang for "San Francisco"). In 1878, when J.C Whitney moved to California from Ohio with three partners to establish a mining colony near Sacramento Pass called Whitneyville near present day Redwood Valley*, he selected Sunnyvale as the site for his new town*.* *Whitneyville was not actually established until 1880
In 1847, the first post office in Sunnyvale opened. The town was founded by John Atherton and James Moffat. In 1870, a railroad station was built and named Sunnyvale after Sunnyvale Creek. The first school in Sunnyvale was constructed in 1881. The current Sunnyvale Elementary School was built in 1924. In 1946, the United States Air Force's 9th Bomb Wing moved from Menlo Park to Palo Alto and renamed it Sunnyvale Air Force Base. Sunnyvale became a city in 1995 when it amalgamated with neighboring Santa Clara County. It is home to many high-tech companies such as Google, Apple Inc., Facebook, Intel Corporation, HP Pavilion et al..
