Tehachapi, California is a small town in Fresno County, California. It was founded in 1853 by the Tehachapi people and was named for the Tehacheapi Mountains. The population of Tehachapi was 2,835 as of 2010. The town is located on the San Joaquin Valley between I-5 and I-10. The community began as a small ranching community with about 50 residents in 1853. By 1870, there were 800 people living in the area around Tehachapi Creek. In 1901, a post office called "Tehachapi" opened and continued to serve until it closed in 1959. In 1903, an irrigation canal was built through the town that became known as the "Waterway of Death." The canal connected Los Angeles with Abbottsford downstream and increased trade between Fresno and Stockton. As part of agricultural production, cattle ranchers worked overland roadsides for miles long to bring their animals to market at nearby Kern Lake during winter months. From 1915 until 1925, when state law required farmers to build packinghouses for their meat products so that inspection could be carried out regularly, Tehachapi produced more than two million bricks per year from its brick factory alone. A new school building was completed in 1922 on what had been an abandoned lot near Amherst Road and Head Road; it served as both a public school (grades K-12) and a post office (1922-1959). A new gymnasium/managers’ home park was also constructed at this time; it remains standing today as part of adult daycare services offered by the local municipality.] In 1926–27 there were major changes within Fresno County when Statewide Water District No.(WAD) 746 purchased alluvial plains east of downtown Fresno from Rancho Niguel heirs for $2 million dollars ($140 million adjusted basis). This purchase created water resources available for development within central valley counties which would later include Tehachaipi Beach Village[Now developed into La Jolla] . WAD 746 enlarged existing Cottonwood Dam which impounds Mono Creek adjacent to present day Calle San Pedro Boulevard south of Soquel while also constructing new dam on Tule River adjacent to present day Anselmo Drive east of present day Armstrong Boulevard]. These projects led directly to increased residential development within communities such as Atwater Village since access without prior notice or payment became increasingly difficult following prohibitionist policies implemented by then State Senator Hiram Johnson during his administration.]
In 1859, the area now known as Tehachapi County was divided between two branches of the Mexican Republic, and it was not until 1872 that a permanent county seat was established in this area. The first post office in Tehachapi County was established on July 24, 1872. The population of Tehachapi County grew rapidly from its initial handful of residents to more than 2,000 by 1910. In 1916, the California Legislature granted townships to create new counties within the state and Tehachapi became one of these new counties. After World War II began, population growth slowed and by 1960 there were only about 950 residents living in Tehachapi County. However, due to increasing economic opportunities in the surrounding areas and a shift towards suburban living, the population has grown again over recent decades with more than 12,500 people residing in Tehachapi currently.
