He became famous for his magic shows which took place at different venues throughout Southern California until 1933 when he moved to New York City due to increasing security concerns with Germany during World War II. One of the most well-known residents of Thousand Oaks since its incorporation as a city was Roy Rogers who resided here from 1947 until his death on November 2, 1998 at 93 years old after many years spent living and working adjacent to Figueroa Street just south of downtown Los Angeles
The First European to Visit Thousand Oaks was Captain Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on October 7, 1542. He and his men were scouting inland for a new route to California when they discovered the coastline. On October 10, he named the spot San Pedro de la Laguna after San Pablo, a Roman Catholic parish in what is now Santa Barbara County. Spanish colonists began arriving in the area in 1769, and by 1821 there were over 100 residents living in what is today Thousand Oaks. The first post office in the town was established in 1827. In 1870, construction began on the Arroyo Seco Canal which connected Los Angeles with Sacramento; this canal would later be renamed the Ventura Freeway. By 1905, resident population had reached 1,500 and it became an incorporated town that year. The city of Thousand Oaks was organized as an independent municipality on November 3 of that year.
