In the 1800s, Thousand Oaks was a small community in southern California. It was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s, and its name comes from the Spanish word "toledo," meaning "village of trees." The area that is now Thousand Oaks was originally part of Rancho Santa Anita, one of 10 ranchos that were formed by Governor Manuel Nieto in 1876. The rancho included land around present-day Thousand Oaks and parts of nearby Los Angeles County. By 1890, much of what is now Thousand Oaks had been developed as a small town. The town experienced a growth spurt during World War II due to its proximity to military bases. In 1945, the United States Military Academy at West Point moved to San Marino and thousands of soldiers living in Los Angeles came moving into Thousand Oaks for work at the academy. This growth led to increased population density and traffic congestion on Ventura Boulevard, which became known as Highway 95A. After war ended, many SMAC students returned home while others shifted their focus to new schools in Lodi and Chatsworth. However, with more jobs available outside of Silicon Valley after technology advanced, people continued moving into Thousand Oaks until it reached its current population size by 2000. Today, there are over 1 million residents living within commuting distance of downtown Los Angeles; however, most residents still live close to their jobs or homes in rural areas outside city limits.
