Turlock, California is located in the San Joaquin Valley of California. As of the 2010 census, its population was 26,459. The town was founded in 1853 by Mormons on land grant from the Spanish government. It became part of California in 1850. Turlock is named after George Turlock and John Sutter, who explored the area in 1846 and 1847 respectively. In 1861, because of a dispute between the United States and Mexico over boundaries for Rancho San Pablo (now Kern County), an act was passed to divide California into two parts: one for Californians and one for Mexicans. The town became part of Mexican territory administered by Porfirio Díaz as part of that partitioning process. In 1915, when World War I began, America annexed Sonoma County to become Santa Clara County; however, due to environmental problems with coal mines there and disagreements about how much land should be annexed to each county, only Turlock was annexed onto Santa Clara County. As a result of this annexation decision, many people moved into or around Turlock during Prohibition years (1937-1945). The turquoise blue waters of Lake Oroville are a major attraction for tourists visiting nearby Livermore National Laboratory and other participating institutions in Silicon Valley. A new park called North Park opened near downtown in 2006 adjacent to Interstate 680 which has been designed as an urban oasis isolated from traffic by a large green space ringed by trees along two sides of I-680; it also features several restaurants overlooking the water including Regency Grill & Brewery on one side and Alinea on the other side facing Highway 1A/I-680 exit 31B.Lake Oroville's disappearance--along with that of Livermore Lab's location--led to concerns about possible environmental degradation from high levels Scientists have since downplayed those concerns but continue research at both sites if needed

The town grew rapidly, largely due to its location at the head of navigation on the river which made it an important commercial center for local farmers and boatmen. In 1870, Turlock became a city and began to develop into a major center for trade and industry. By 1884,Turlock had become one of the largest cities in California with over 100,000 residents. The city's growth continued through the 20th century, with increased development around its downtown area and its numerous businesses and industrial districts. By 1925, TurLOCK had reached its peak population size with over 200,000 residents; however, during World War II the city experienced significant bombing damage which led to its decline thereafter
