After Universal Studios shut down several times due to financial problems, an agreement was reached between buyers of its stock (i.e., independent movie theaters) and management to maintain a small shareholding so that each theater could continue operating finances within its own budget while still being able to make profitable movies without outside investment or interference from the larger company. This system lasted until 2003 when Universal Studios announced plans to close all but 10 theaters nationwide under pressure from exhibitors over costs associated with digital projection technology; this left Turlock as the only major city without any large movie theater operator remaining inside its downtown core following those closures.
