By 1870, there were over 100 residents living in what would become Walnut creek township; however, development did not continue apace until after World War II when the post-war boom created more jobs for local farmers and businessmen than could be supported by single families or small villages like those near Livermore and San Jose. In 1951, following passage of the United States Defense Authorization Act which provided $2 million to increase agricultural production in support of national security (the same year saw completion of Interstate 280), walnuts began being grown nearby on properties such as that owned by businessman Abe Bechtel (1909-1988). When I-280 was built through much of Contra Costa County in the early 1990s Avenue H running northeasterly from Walnut Creek paralleling I-680 became known as “Beachtel Boulevard” because many businesses located along its length derived their names from their founders: Bechtel Air Conditioning Company (Alameda Street), Bechtel Paper Products Inc., Bechtel Trucking Company (Main Street/Avenue H), First National Bank & Trust Company (Nolan Road/Wang Road), and Pacific Gas & Electric Company (Main Street/Avenue H). At its peak, Walnut Creek had a population of over 507 people. However, by 1920 it had shrunk to just under 300 people due to Prohibition and the effects of World War I; however, it rebounded quickly after prohibition was repealed. In 1924, Drury Lane Theater opened in Walnut Creek and remains one of the most popular theaters in California today with regular performances by Broadway shows such as "The Sound Of Music" and "Aida". Over time other entertainment venues have been added including a movie theater (1951), bowling alley (1958), live music venue (1987) and casino (2006).
