On December 17, 1872, the fortifications were abandoned and converted into pleasure gardens known as Rancho las Bolsas de la Costa del Pacifico by wealthy landowner Don Anacleto y Costilla. 1st Lt George Armstrong Custer was shot while scouting this area for buffalo in June 1876 during his 7th Cavalry Regiment's attack against Apaches at Adobe Walls which resulted in Custer's death

Woodland, California is a small town in the Central Valley of California. It is located about 20 miles northeast of Sacramento, and about 25 miles southwest of Fresno. The population was 1,763 at the 2010 census. The first European to visit what is now Woodland was Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo on November 26, 1542. He named the area San Francisco de la Margarita after his ship LaMargarita. The name may be derived from an earlier pinyon-juniper forest that extended eastward from this location. In 1821, José Maria Borrega founded a mission called Nuestra Señora de los Dolores near present-day Woodland after he lost his way while exploring southcentral California along the Santa Cruz River valley. A year later, Antonio López Chávez established a mission at Mission San Joaquin (now known as El Presidio) just north of present-day Woodland on February 17, 1824; it functioned as both a religious and secular center for Mexican Californians during this period of County Formal organization. In 1848 John Sutter founded what would become Sacramento when he discovered gold near Stockton in northern California. At first Sutter built Fort Yuma on land granted by Mexico but then sold off to various men including Sutter's nemesis General Mariano Guerrero who used it as an artillery range around which he conducted military exercises across Islay mountain range east of Sacramento; these exercises led to Guerrero being accused of war crimes during the Mexican–American War and executed by firing squad in 1851 outside Yuma Creek whereupon most of his body became embedded in rock outcroppings nearby today. On July 16th 1850 US soldiers burned down part of Alta California due to lack of supplies after retreating from Monterey Peninsula following Mexicali Campaign against Mexico under US command with General John Custer leading unit forces consisting mostly United States Cavalry Missouri Tigers commanded by Captain Lew Wallace and Ensign Samuel Whitehurst: "This unprovoked act caused public indignation throughout muchof our territory" resulting in Stewart's Order No 11 which ordered all troops remaining at Monterey Peninsula "to return home immediately." This order was rescinded 10 days later upon learning that General Andrew Jackson had defeated Mexico & its leader President Vicente Guerrero at Buena Vista Springs battlefield weeks earlier on April 24th (April 25th UC). American troops reoccupied Alta California 3 weeks later on September 12th 1850 at Presidious Rancho del Rio Seco also known as Rosebud Gulch today's Northridge Boulevard with Lieutenant Colonel James Halleck commanding them: "We herewith tender my compliments to your Excellency for having so nobly exclaimed against such barbarity attendant upon our recent military operations". As per Riley’s History Of Los Angeles County Volumes 1-3 “The Americans were not content until they had destroyed everything combustible within reach…the village went up in flames” burning buildings including churches and homes leaving behind extensive Ruins still standing today including Mission San Francisco Solano (1849), Mission Concepción (1850),Mission Sonsomuel (1853),Mission Santiago Apostolico Nuevo(1854),Mission De Anza Pueblo(1855), Nuestra Señora del Carmelo Parish Church(1857) & convento de las Mercedes de Jesus y Nuestra Señora del Carmen adobada en 1861 el presidio de placerandoy hoy el sector residencialdel municipio situado cerca de la autopista Federal 101 . All told according to historian Michael Dorman writing for website LA Weekly both Ulysses S Grant’s elaborate new headquarters–the largest ever completed inside the United States—and numerous other installations dotting Soquel Road detract from any sense that AltaCalifornia was under occupation or control other than occasional skirmishes between American soldiery and Mexicans irregulars over grazing rights or trade goods." Some people believe there may have been another major battle taking place here too - Battle Of Adobe Walls – fought between Ulysses S Grant’s army trying to drive Native Americans away from their holdings southeast of Sacramento engaged in cattle drives across Amador Peak mountains near Adobe Walls Oregon around October 21st 1868 some sources say however no definitive evidence has been found confirming this event took place
The first Europeans to visit the area that would become Woodland were Spanish explorers in 1769. The land was part of Rancho Santa Fe, which had been granted by Mexico to José Antonio de Arco, a pioneer and military officer. In 1821, California became a U.S. territory and Arco's ranch passed down to his son John C. Arco Jr., who sold it in 1881 to James Krieger, an American entrepreneur and railroadman. The Krieger family also donated land for the current city of Woodland on San Andreas Fault in 1912.
