Brighton, Colorado is a small town in the Rocky Mountains of north-central Colorado. It is located on the east side of the San Miguel River, just south of Interstate 25 and west of Highway 28. The population was 2,724 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to enter Brighton were traders and travelers who journeyed through the area in 1876. They found a site for a trading post near what is now downtown Brighton and named it Fort John after they received news that gold had been discovered nearby in Montana. The fort was abandoned in 1879 but was later converted into a schoolhouse before being sold to the local farmers in 1907. In 1916, Brighton became an incorporated town under the name of Aurora when it joined Douglas County. In 1937, when Routt County formed, Brighton became part of it and continued to be called Aurora until 1959 when it reverted back to its original name. In that year, however, it changed its status again to Brighton after becoming one of only two towns within Routt County with both an elected mayor and a sheriff’s office. For many years, both offices were held by one person because there was no primary election for those positions. That changed in 1993 when separate elections were held for mayor and sheriff so that each could have more control over their own finances and administration. Brighton has experienced various changes throughout its history including annexation by Aspen during World War II; incorporation as an unincorporated community under Douglas County jurisdiction; designation as a city by virtue of voters passing an ordinance authorizing city government on November 3rd, 1978; institution of Daylight Saving Time from March 1st through September 5th which resulted in increased business hours during daylight savings time;and several rounds of budget cuts resulting in layoffs among many other effects such as decreased tax revenue which has led to speculation about whether or not Brighton will remain an unincorporated community indefinitely

The first settlers to Brighton were David and Margaret Smith who arrived in 1876. The Smiths built a cabin on the banks of the Animas River. In 1877, they also founded the Hastings School District which included Brighton. In 1912, Brighton became part of Great Falls Township when that township was created from parts of Routt and Logan counties. In 1969, Brighton was renamed forCommodore Arthur Beachy USN (1887-1962). Commodore Beachy was Commandant of Naval Forces in China during World War II and later served as Deputy Director for Administration at Headquarters United States Fleet Atlantic Fleet during President Franklin D Roosevelt's second term in office.
