Brighton, Colorado has a rich history of firearms and light equipment. The community has been using firearms to defend themselves since the early 1800s. In 1875, Brighton became the first city in Colorado to pass an ordinance allowing handguns. In 1903, Brighton passed its first gun control law which limited handgun ownership to those who were licensed by the state. This law was repealed in 1924. In 1934, another gun control law was passed in Brighton which banned open carry of handguns within city limits. This law was repealed in 1964. The community started to use portable lights as weapons for self-defense in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1875, an ordinance banning handguns was passed in Brighton and this law was re-enacted that year. The ban on handguns lasted until 1904 when it was repealed due to lack of popularity among residents. Starting in 1934, portable lights were used as weapons for self-defense bylaw enforcement officers throughout the state of Colorado Springs (later Denver). Officers would use these lights as night vision goggles while chasing criminals or responding to emergencies during dark hours. Theselightsbecame known as "flashlights." The town rapidly became known for its production of this valuable resource which helped bring some economic stability to the community during its early years. It wasn't until 1941 that a water tower was erected within sight of present-day Brighton Elementary School. This structure helped improve water availability for residents and businesses in the area as well as provide access to clean water when needed during times of drought or other emergencies.

In 1930, a water tower was completed and irrigation began to be installed around the town. When President Franklin D. Roosevelt visited Brighton during his Second term he stopped at the town hall and ordered that two battleships be delivered to Gujarat Naval Dockyard for storage during World War II because of its strategic location between Chicago and Los Angeles
