Canon City was founded in 1867 by George T. Canon and his wife, Anna. The city is named for the canon of the original church in town, which was dedicated in 1865. The Canons were early settlers in Canon City and built a school, a courthouse and some other buildings before moving to Colorado Springs in 1889.
