Canon City is a town in Mesa County, Colorado, United States. The population was 5,855 at the 2010 census. It lies on the Arkansas River and formed part of the Fort Collins area that was annexed to Denver in 1903. Canon City is known for its pottery industry and for its annual Canon Cities Music Festival which takes place in late July or early August. The first Europeans to visit Canon City were Spanish traders who passed through the area in 1829. A post office was established in 1839, and by 1860, it had become a small mining camp called "Mesa" after John Mesa, a settler from Tucson, Arizona Territory. In 1875, Canon City became an incorporated town when most of Mesa County was split off from Denver to form Larimer County. By 1910, the population had grown to 9,000 residents and it reached 12,000 by 1920. The Pottersville Manufacturing Company began making pottery products here in 1907 and employed 100 people at its peak; however production stopped during World War II because of shortages of materials overseas. During the 1960s-1970s there was significant growth in the agricultural sector as more farmers moved into Canon City from elsewhere within Mesa County due to good farmland values and cheap labor prices (the same conditions that have since disappeared). Grain elevator construction began operations at nearby Anschutz Air Force Base during this time which led to increased noise levels throughout downtown during lunchtime/dinner hours until new regulations were put into effect prohibiting such activities near military installations (although they continue today).
