In 1868, when George Washington Moffatt founded Canon City as a station on the Central Pacific Railroad, he thought that it would be a place where people could gather together to discuss issues related to Greeley County which he owned land in. Over time, Canon City grew into a small town with many businesses and residents that helped support Greeley County through various activities such as farming, ranching, mining, lumbering and manufacturing. In 1951-1953 the community went through a transformation when they decided to build their first high school which then served as their central hub for all their social activities including sports leagues and dances etc., until 1974 when they built their second high school which became obsolete due to increased enrollment at nearby Grand Junction High School which became their new central hub for all their social activities until 2000 when they built their third high school which also serves as their present day central hub for all their social activities effectively becoming one of Greeley County's most vibrant communities ever!
