Canon City is a small city in the U.S. state of Colorado, named after Canon George Washington and his wife, Lucy Mason. The population was 19,594 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Aurora-Edwardsburg-Glenwood Springs metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Canon City was Lorenzo Dowling in 1875. He built a log cabin on the east side of Cherry Creek. He later bought more land and built an even larger cabin on what is now 4th Street near North Broadway Avenue. The first post office in Canon City was established in 1878, and became known as Dowlingville because of Lorenzo Dowling's ownership of the building and its contents. In 1888, William Pemberton purchased land to the west of present-day Cherry Creek from Lorenzo Dowling and founded Pemberton Ranch which eventually grew into Park County to encompass all or part of what is now Canon City, Boulder County to include parts of Broomfield and Longmont counties, and Larimer County to include parts of Morrison and Weld counties (later including Denver). In 1906, Canon City incorporated as a town under Statute 10A §1 et seq., with a population limit set at 25 citizens per square mile (10 km²). The original plat for town included three blocks on Cherry Creek between 4th Street NE & South Broadway NE with two houses each; one block north along South Broadway NE & 2nd Street NW; also included were portions of 3rd & 5th Streets NW which would form our present day downtown area today (northwest corner 3rd/5th streetsNE) Pemberton died suddenly while vacationing in Mexico leaving his estate divided among his children; Irvin Pemberton took over management but made few changes until 1915 when he sold the ranch to Frank Henson who developed it into what is now Parker Ranch Estates housing developments that still exist today . From 1915 until 1933 there was only one grocery store open for business called John's Pantry located at 309 S 4th St Nw where Frank Henson lived until his death in 1957 . In 1934 town limits were redefined by statute 10A §2 resulting in annexation by Longmont Village lying just south about 6 miles east from town center . Today most people think that annexation happened due to being within incorporated boundaries so there would be no legal consequences if they left In 1935 Town limits were redefined again by statute 10A §3 this time resulting in incorporation within Park County with its own government including an elected mayor & assessor During World War II much activity occurred outside the walls due to local production shortages so there wasn't any real downtown development taking place although residents did establish several businesses such as Canons Clothing Store operated outof rented space on Fourth Street across from High School across from Cannonball Mall since 1941 However starting around 1948 things changed when Canons Clothing Store moved back inside Main & Elm Streets after years operating out front behind High School
