The town was founded on a small ranch by two brothers who named their settlement Castle Rock after their castle in France. The two brothers were from a family of gunsmiths and traders who had come to America from Normandy in France during the late eighteenth century. The first settlers in Castle Rock were farmers who grew crops and raised livestock. Over time, however, some of the original settlers began to make money as businessmen and they started to build businesses such as coal mines and lumber mills. In addition, some of the early immigrants also became involved in politics and began to contribute money to various organizations such as the Republican Party. As time passed, Castle Rock became known for its delicious cheese which was produced by local farmers while also hosting several annual rodeos which attracted large crowds of spectators. In 1950, CastleRock incorporated as a municipality which allowed for more control over its economy and social life. Since then, CastleRock has experienced many significant changes including easy access to education and healthcare options, high-quality restaurants and bars within walking distance, growth in tourism industry (particularly during summer months), an increase in residential development (both new constructionand renovation), as well as continued growth within the professional services sector.
