When Colorado became a state in 1876, the population of Centennial was just over 10,000. The city’s only gunsmith had to suffice and quickly found himself overwhelmed with requests for new guns. In response, the Centennial Gun Club created a Zion Gun Cleaning and Preservation Society in 1881. It still exists today as the oldest continuously operatinggun club in the United States. Centennial was home to several other organizations that also played an important role in firearm history. These include the Rocky Mountain Rifle Association (RMRA) which was founded in 1902 and remains one of the largest rifle clubs in North America; the Western Federation of Miners (WFM) which organized Denver miners into unions during World War I; and First Colorado National Bank, which opened its doors on July 6, 1911 to serve as America’s first bank with a retail store devoted exclusively to Firearms. Today, Centennial is known for its annualGun Show which is one of the most popular events onColorado's calendar. Centennial, Colorado is a town in Routt County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pueblo–Jaguarland Micropolitan Statistical Area. The Centennial area was settled by Europeans in 1876 and named after the centenary of the Treaty of Fort Laramie that ended the Mexican-American War. The first post office in Centennial was established on November 25, 1876. The present town site was laid out by James Hutton and fellow pioneer George Custer during what were called "the golden years" of ranching in eastern Colorado. A railhead for a wagon road leading from Durango to Golden was built here in 1879 and served as a center for trade with other parts of Mexico and Intermountain West until it closed down in 1902. In 1901, Centennial organized as a townsite with a population of 581 residents; it grew rapidly due to its location along US 66 between Durango and Aspen (now Aspen Air Force Base). In 1907 it annexed the neighboring unincorporated community of Haskell City; this annexation created what is now known as Haskell County. By 1930, Centennial had reached its peak population with over 12,000 people living scattered throughout nearly 120 small businesses and dwellings; however, economic stagnation followed during World War II whenCentennial became an important producing center for munitions production near Grand Junction. During the 1960s and 1970s various efforts were made to revive Centennial's economy which included construction of several shopping malls around Loveland/Aurora area combined with private philanthropy from individuals or foundations such as 100% Renewable Energy Development Corporation (formerly Rocky Mountain Renewable Energy)*** . However these initiatives failed to generate significant new business or residential development which has caused some revitalization attempts since 2000*** .
