Centennial, Colorado is a small town in the San Miguel Valley that celebrated its centennial in 2010. The town emerged from the ashes of what used to be an active mining and ranching community in 1876. Centennial was founded by three men who enlisted in the Union army during the American Civil War: George Kapp, John Fetterman, and J.B. Ritchie. The three men were part of a wagon train that travelled down the Santa Fe Trail from Independence, Missouri to Fort Bridger nearpresent- day Boise Idaho on July 4th 1870. The name Centennial comes from nearby Mount Taylor which had been named for General Philip Watts Kearny on October 6th 1868 when he led an attack against Mexican forces at Rancho Cienega de San Francisco (now Telluride) east of present day Centennial. Kearny's victory ended Mexico'sTodd rebellion and demonstrated United States military might in neighboring Mexico City. In 1907, Centennial became one of the first towns in Colorado to have electric lights installed streetlights and water systems were built soon after as well as schools, churches and other necessary infrastructure for growth. Businesses like hotels and restaurants started emerging around this time with more people coming into town to spend their summer days or winters hereabouts. This period also saw some major changes within Centennial itself; such as construction of a new high school which opened its doors on September 10th 1927 followed by a renovation project which doubled its size just two years later on November 4th 1930! Excavations took place during this time at an old silver mine located northeast of town revealing artifacts dating back to the 1800s! This overall redevelopment project was completed under auspices of Governor Clarence King who declared it "the most important development ever made within our borders." Despite these various advancements throughout its early years Centenary experienced some economic setbacks due largely to being sandwiched between Denver municipality east along I-25 & Pueblo municipality west along I-70 & Tooele County municipality south along US 36 & Highway 25
The Centennial celebrations in Colorado were held from September 1 to 3, 1912. The event was commemorated by the erection of a statue of General George Custer at the state Capitol in Denver.
