Centennial is known as the "City of Light" and has been a center for creativity, education, and entertainment since its incorporation in 1876. Two years later, local author Eileen Fisher wrote her book entitled "Centennials: A History of Our People." Centennial, Colorado is a town located in San Miguel County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. Centennial is home to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Military Park and the University of Colorado Boulder. The first permanent settler in what became Centennial was George Hinkle in 1876. By 1888, there were 4 businesses in town and 25 people living there. A post office and school were established in 1889 but did not open until 1893 due to lack of funding. In 1897, Centennial had a population of 507 and began to grow rapidly as a result of its strategic location on the Gunnison River floodplain. In 1912, Centennial acquired title to 640 acres (250 hectares) east of downtown that would become the town's main square. The following year saw Centenary's first parade featuring floats made from local horses and mules along with military hardware from nearby Fort Lyon and Fort Defiance. During World War I, Centennial played an important role as an ammunition dump for the Western Front; during the war it also became home to 2 Army hospitals and 3 artillery batteries! After the war ended, industry began arriving in town while homes continued to be built up around Main Street until 1940 when a fire destroyed most of downtown including much ofthe central square which still stands today

The centenary year also saw important milestones in Centennial’s history such as the dedication of the first public school in Centennial on July 4th, 1899; construction of The Denver Post building on Main Street in 1911; and incorporation as a city on January 1st, 1916. Many businesses closed during World War I because there was little trade between Colorado and Europe; however, after 1919 business began to improve thanks to new transportation options and an increase in tourism. In 1949, Centennial became one of thirteen townships within Larimer County when it was split off from Weld County. Over time, this has led to increased competition among residents for scarce governmental resources which has resulted in some problems such as overdevelopment and social unrest. However, through collaboration with neighboring municipalities and other government entities Centennial has been able to rebound from these issues. Today, Centennial is a vibrant community that continues to experience growth despite challenges posed by current economic conditions. Thanks to its rich history and culture, Centenary remains an important part of both local and statewide communities."
Centennial began in 1876, when the United States acquired Colorado from Mexico. The first decade of the new century saw many changes for Centennial. On July 14, 1876, the city of Denver was founded as a result of a land deal between Colorado and New Mexico. Denver was not just an agricultural town; it also became an important transportation and commercial center. In 1880, Centennial celebration featured a large parade through downtown Denver that included floats made of tin cans and horses drawn by dogs. One year later,Denver's first electric streetcar service started operation. The 20th century was also characterized by intense growth in Centennial. With the help of industrialists such as George Westinghouse and John Ducey, Centennial saw deepening economic development and major cultural changes. Most notably, Centennial became home to the world's first permanent international exposition—the International Cotton Fair—in 1901. As businesses grew larger and more complex, so too did their financial sponsorships of centenary events - which helped create tension within some quarters over how much attention should be given to commemorative commemoration while other aspects of society were neglected or even destroyed during World War I (1914-1918). In 1925-1926, centenary celebrations spawned one of history's most infamous riots - the so-called "Red Summer". Tens of thousands people demonstrating against high prices and poor living conditions clashed with police on Sixth Avenue in downtown Denver near Union Station; dozens were killed and hundreds injured. This event is still remembered today as one of America's deadliest riots since Reconstruction era racism had ended decades earlier
