Commerce City is a town in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States. The population was 853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1876 by James K. Polk and his family as the junction of Clear Creek and Arkansas Rivers. The name "Commerce" comes from a cattle drive that passed through the area in 1879. In 1886, J.W. Drake formed a partnership with Wm Henson to develop what would become Commerce City proper. Drake's Store continues to be an important part of the community today and it is one of only two remaining general stores west of Denver (the other being Goudy's). In 1920, George Philbrook opened his successful grocery store in Commerce City which remains open today as the Philbrook General Store & gift shop. In 1951, Harry Sweeny erected the first building on Main Street within Commerce City limits which now houses the Community Bank & Credit Union - one of several businesses that have been located in downtown since its establishment over 25 years ago. In 1984,commercecity became a city when it merged with Aurora Township
Commerce City is a city in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 28,254 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Commerce City was David Goodyear in 1876. The city was founded on May 4, 1886 by George Fenton and his family as an agricultural center to support the growing agriculture industry in Weld County. In 1912, the Union Pacific Railroad built a line fromDenver to Commerce City and established a depot there. The depot served as the town's commercial center until it closed in 1964. After World War II, Commerce City became an industrial center with several hundred companies manufacturing products such as automobiles and appliances. In the late 1960s and early 1970s however, many small businesses that had been supported by this growth closed because of rising costs of energy and other factors. This led to increased joblessness among these residents and a decline in economic activity which has hampered downtown businesses since then. In recent years efforts have been made to revive downtown commerce with new development along Market Street including restaurants and bars; however, progress has been slow due to opposition from local business owners who fear competition from more established establishments away from their turf
