Commerce City is a town in Clear Creek County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1871 by John Prentice and his brother-in-law, David Dixon. They named it after the city of Commerce in Michigan. The first store was built on Main Street and operated for one year before closing down due to lack of business. In 1875, they opened a second store on Valentine Avenue which continued to be open until 1922. In 1876, the Prentice brothers organized the Merchants and Merchants' Association to help promote trade in Clear Creek County. This group helped start a number of businesses such as a bank and flour mill. The association also helped develop what would become Commerce City Square (later known as Exchange Place). On July 4, 1907, Commerce City became incorporated with a population of 2,500 people. The first post office in Commerce City was established on December 3, 1885; it remained in operation until it closed on October 14, 1923. In 1896 Junction National Bank opened up shop in what is now downtown Commerce City square with $10 per day for depositors during its early years. By 1905 there were over 30 banks operating within the city limits with $2 million in assets! In 1926 when Colorado legalized gamblingAMES started banking operations out of an old restaurant called White Sands Casino which housed several different banks including First American National Bank & Trust Company from Denver where Gambling revenues totaled more than $100 thousand that year alone! That same year another major banking institution came into town when Western Union sent its founder Julius Caesar Booth to open up their new headquarters at 10th street and Academy Avenue! plaza across from White Sands Casino which had been vacant since 1909! At this time downtown commercecity had grown so much that two small buildings- Starbuck's Coffee House and Lyon's Drug Store- were all able to accommodate growth well beyond their original boundaries! This success story can be seen throughout downtown today where multiple smaller businesses have combined forces to create one thriving community center complete with convenience stores/grocery stores/restaurants/bars & clubs etc… It should be noted that even though DowntownCommerceCity has experienced many successes throughout its history there have been some challenges too; for example during the late 1990s through 2000s there was significant development around Keystone Crossing located just east of Town Square which opposed plans by Mayor Randy Gardner to renovate both properties into one large mixed use project – this led eventually to a court battle that ended inconclusively but left behind some very ugly scars along Keystone Crossing Boulevard
