In 1602–03, Pánfilo founded Santa Fe de las Estrellas (laterSanta Fe) on an elevated site overlooking Durango where he established a trading post that became one of Southern California's most important centers for trade with Mexico City. In 1776, durango residents revolted against British rule following colonial efforts to annex their land. For three years they unsuccessfully fought against British forces before being defeated at Battle of Zuni Hills near present-day Telluride Springs). After independence was declared in 1821, General José Joaquín De Arrastiay called upon volunteers from across South America to help quell a Mexican rebellion led by General Antonio Lopez Robles inside Oficina del Encuentro region west of Durango City limits along US Highway 66 between Aspen and Trinidad (the current location of Alamosa). On July 10th 1830 Mexican general Ignacio Zaragoza marched into Durango under cover of darkness expecting local militia loyal to Governor José María Morelos notto resist him but instead they dispersed when they saw two cannons mounted on stagecoaches outside Fort Union; Zaragoza believed that more Mexicans had deserted than opposed him Because there were few troops stationed within Oficina del Encuentro itself – about ninety men under Captain Javier Sotomayor Battalion commanded by Captain Pedro Nieto - Zaragoza ordered his men not only into downtown Durango but also outlying villages such as Zuni Falls where they pillaged homes and killed thousands if not hundreds of unarmed villagers before withdrawing back towards Mexico City under cover of darkness on July 12th 1830 without achieving any tangible results other than helping provoke another civil war within Mexico over who should control southern Texas - which would culminate with Mexican annexation all around US soil just over a decade later! The various battles fought during this time period are commemorated annually by various events taking place throughout Downtown Durango including Parades Internacionales Patrióticas (International Patriotic parades), Cantabile Mariachi (Cantankerous Mariachi parade), Fiesta Mexicana (Mexican Independence Day parade), cobra show & carnival games etc... One such event occurred on September 11th 1886 during Tax Day celebrations when 1st Lt Josés Gómez Bravo units from 4th Infantry Regiment invaded Antioquia Parish along US border from east side upriver past Guadalupe Bridge then turned southwest downriver past Tomé Dam onto Ute Mesa Road killing several peopleCache Cache National Monument Site represents remnants still visible today from Massacre at Tomé Dam
In 1859, the U.S. government purchased 1,500 acres of land in Durango, Colorado for $5 per acre. The first homesteaders arrived in 1860 and began building their homes. In 1862, the United States Territorial Legislature designated Durango as the capital of the new territories east of the Rockies. The city was officially founded on November 20, 1865 by a group of American soldiers who had been sent to help suppress a Mexican uprising in that area. The city prospered until 1876 when an earthquake destroyed most of downtown and most of the infrastructure.
