Englewood is a city in Coryell County, Colorado, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Englewood Arsenal was built in 1867 by George Neely and others to produce arms for the Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad Company. The arsenal closed in 1928 but some of its relics are still on display in the Munster Museum of Art. The current name Englewood first appeared on maps around 1868 when it was called "Eglington." The town site was chosen because it lay near a water supply with an ample amount of trees for lumbering purposes. By 1870, Englewood had a post office, schoolhouse, and two churches. In 1871 sawmills were established along Center Street and soon there were several businesses including a gristmill, livery stable, grocery store, harness shop, blacksmith shop and three hotels: one named Park Place (later renamed Regency), another called Empire State Hotel after New York City's Empire State Building (now OneBank Financial Building) and another named the Hollywood Hotel after Leland Stanford's movie theater chain in Hollywood – all now gone but their names remain as landmarks or districts within Englewood today. In 1902 a new engine factory by General Electric became operational adjacent to First National Bank building which would later become known as GEICO Field Headquarters during World War II until that structure was destroyed by fire on September 11th 1945; that event becoming known as "the Day That Englewood Died" due to its importance within that community at that time A branch line from Gunnison Junction ran into town connecting withDenver & Rio Grande Western Railroad mainline east oftown making it possible for goods to be brought into town overland while also providing access to mills located within walking distance such as those mentioned earlier producing supplies not only for growth within town but also much beyond just what could be accessed via train or highway
