Englewood, Colorado is a small town in the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area with a population of about 60,000. It is located on the edge of Arapaho National Forest and is home to Englewood High School and Englewood Community College. The first Europeans to visit Englewood were fur traders from Canada in 1824. The town was platted in 1852 by John D. Rockefeller and named for his brother-in-law, Nathan Englemann. The first post office was established in 1853, and the town became a census place in 1870. In 1907, Engelwood began offering classes in forestry at its high school. In 1911, it became the first community college in Colorado to offer a degree program in forestry science. The college was renamed Englewood Community College in 1958 after Dr. Anna Landon Engel (1863-1957). During World War II, Engelwood helped create two airfields here: Pueblo Municipal Airport (now owned by Pueblo County) and Nellis Air Force Base (now part of Northern Arizona University). In 1947, the city built an arena for the Denver Nuggets that remains used today as the main gymnasium forEngelwood High School athletics. In 1968, EngelWOOD organized what would become known as "The Town Council". This group had authority over local issues such as zoning changes and street lighting; however their role declined after 1970 when elected officials assumed more centralized control from City Hall due to limited funding available from city coffers. Englewood, Colorado is a small town in the western United States. It was founded in 1879 by John Engle and James Laughlin. The two men had come to the area to prospect for oil. The settlement grew rapidly, and by 1902 it had a population of 1,500 people. In 1907,Englewood became an incorporated municipality. Over the years, the village has undergone various changes, including becoming an all-Republican town during World War II; changing its name to Englewood after its mayor died in 1970; and becoming a city in 2001. Today, Englewood remains a primarily rural community with a largely white population. However, over time it has become one of the most diverse cities in the Denver metropolitan area. The town center is located at 5th Street and Broadway Avenue near Interstate 25 and Keystone Road. It is bordered on one side by State Highway 362 (Broadway Boulevard), which connects Denver to Aurora on the south side and Park Hill on the north side; on the other side are portions of Englewood that are part of Thornton County (the eastern edge of which borders Centennial Hills). The first settlers arriving in what is now Englewood were farmers who came from rural Pennsylvania about 1800s looking for land for their families to grow food on – they found some but not much success because there was no good location suitable for farming near springs or riverside resources like oil shale or saltpeter deposits as they were seeking elsewhere outside Pennsylvania’s eastern border at then called “wingate [now Wingate] County” located east of Lancaster County between Baltimore City proper (northwest) and Philadelphia County (southwest)]. Englewood was founded in 1868 by George A. Engle and his wife, Anna Maria. The first post office in the town was established in 1870. By 1880, Englewood had a population of about 100 people. In 1886, the town became a municipality and by 1912 had a population of 4,000 people. In 1968, Englewood was merged into the City of Aurora.
