Evans was founded in 1872 by men from Virginia who were seeking land for a new railroad. The town originally consisted of only thirty houses but has since grown into a thriving community with over one thousand residents. The Evanstown School District serves students in grades pre-kindergarten through twelveth grade. Additionally, there are two post-secondary institutions located in Evanstown: Eastern Colorado University (ECU) and Lewis & Clark Community College (LCCC). Both schools offer undergraduate degrees as well as graduate programs in different areas including business, law, health sciences/ehealthcare administration, nursing/patient care management, education/consulting/marketing science, information technology/software engineering and architecture. In addition to its educational institutions there are several businesses located throughout Evanstown that offer services such as pawn shops, pet stores and construction companies. There are also several restaurants located within walking distance of most residents which provide both local food options as well as national chain cuisine options when desired. He was a man of many talents. Born in Evans, Colorado on December 5, 1881, John Evans was a miner and veteran of World War I. He also had an important role in the development of Evans County as it exists today. John began his career at the age of 16 as a smelter clerk at American Smelting and Refining Company. After two years he moved to Silverton and worked there for six years before coming back to Evans in 1924 to become the company’s general manager. In this position he led AmeriSmelters into new era with its production of aluminum foil products. Eager to see his company grow, John left AmeriSmelters in 1936 to form his own mining company called Rocky Mountain Copper Corporation (RMCC). The venture would prove successful and within five years RMCC had acquired over 2 million acres of land located in what is now Adams County, Colorado. The mines produced copper ore and silver bars which were shipped back east for refining into coins, jewelry and other commodities. John passed away on May 1st, 1984 after making significant contributions to both Evans County history and the mining industry himself.
