Federal Heights, Colorado is a town located in Arapahoe County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,682 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Federal Heights was James Ewing in 1868. He and his family built a cabin on the east side of Interstate 25 near what is now Boulder Boulevard. In 1870-71, Tom Cochrane arrived with his family from Ontario and established Cochrane's Store and Post Office in Federal Heights. In 1872-73 John Haggerty also moved to Federal Heights from Carbon Creek Township. Haggerty erected the first schoolhouse in Federal Heights which he named "Haggerty's School". By 1875, there were six families living in Federal Heights. In 1876 General John Custer led an attacking cavalry regiment called the 6th Cavalry through Arapahoe County during the Mexican–American War. Many of the residents of Arapahoe County fled to Federal Heights as cattle drives passed through their area on their way to Kansas City or Cheyenne Wells troopers held them hostage at gunpoint while they awaited shipment back home. The community continued to grow as people came to trade goods and services with those living along I-25 or nearby towns like Aspen (now Aspen Highlands). By 1880s most of what is now downtown Federal Heights had been developed including several stores, a post office, schools (including one for African Americans), churches, a hospital and dozens of homes/apartments. On July 1st 1886 Congressman Hiram Lodge gave formal approval for incorporation of Arapahoe County by proclamation becoming its first county executive even though he still resided in Denver due to health concerns about moving into another city full time after such long service within Colorado’s congressional delegation including 11 years as U.S Ambassador to Mexico City—a controversial position that stirred strong opposition from many citizens who felt it would give him too much power center stage; nonetheless incorporation occurred on August 16th 1886 under Lodge’s watchful eye following passage by both houses of Congress of Amendment I creating “Arapaho County” out of Douglas County which included all but part of federal land within Indian Territory eastward over Larimer Valley until then administered by territorial governor Samuel Teller pursuant thereto certain reservations falling within Larimer Valley westward having been so designated November 9th 1885 when approved by President Grover Cleveland via messagegram signed by Secretary Seward at Fort Defiance Oklahoma TerritoryNovember 10th 1888 incorporating 810 square miles making it larger than any other county except Denver proper having 3 legislative districts each comprising 640 voters equal representation being Dems 50% GOP 50% independents 20% others notes: mentioned above are not necessarily events that took place when said areas were incorporated but rather indicate notable developments taking place adjacent thereto
