Hays's son-in-law Charles Fenton located a cabin on land that would become part of Federal Heights in 1880. In 1889, Fenton donated two lots adjacent to his cabin for $2 each which were later combined into one lot for $10 dollars ($100 today). The name "Fenton" may be derived from this donation or it could be that Charles Fenton was related to General George Armstrong Custer (1805-1891), an officer of the US Cavalry during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). In 1902, General Electric established their engineering plant here which remain operational to this day. Initially called the National Broadcasting Company Radio Station No. 4 (NBC), the station first aired programming from Philadelphia on November 14th 1920 under license #270005 from American Telephone & Telegraph Company (AT&T) with studios at 10270 North First Street in Philadelphia then moved to its current site at 12500 South First Street where it still operates today as KUSA radio station 990 AM/FM

The first building to be used as a national headquarters was erected here in 1881 by President James K. Polk under the auspices of Congress's Commission on Geographic Names. The present building was completed in 1903 and served as the primary home of both Presidents George Washington Carver and Franklin D. Roosevelt until 1945 when it became Headquarters for Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The town was again renamed Federal Heights after World War II when much of downtownDenver changed hands due to war materiel shortages and radioactive materials were removed from areas such as Jefferson Park and Arapahoe Street corridor during that time period In 1970, current Mayor Michael Hancock proposed creating a "Federal Hills" community adjacent to Interstate 25/Broadway between I-25/I-70 and Downingtown Road/9th Avenue NW which would have seen construction of housing, shopping centers, office space, parks etc., while keeping much historical land within Federal Heights boundaries
The Federal Heights area was first settled in the 1840s by American Indians. The first white settler, James Pemberton, arrived in 1848. A post office was established at Federal Heights in 1851, and the town platted out in 1853. By 1861, there were about 100 residents living in Federal Heights. The Kansas–Nebraska Act of 1862 created a new state within the United States, and many federal workers who lived on the eastern edge of Colorado moved to Kansas when that state became a part of the Union. In 1865, following the Civil War, most of what is now Federal Heights came under control of Colorado from Union territory. It remained an agricultural community until after World War II when it began to become an industrial center with manufacturing plants such as General Motors and Boeing.
