The neighborhood has seen some recent development: In 2006, developer John Doherty announced plans for a mixed-use development called “Westminster Square” that would include apartments, office space, and retail on top of an old Walmart warehouse property near I-25 and Downing Street Drive. However, no progress has been made since then; in May 2017 it was reported that developers had abandoned their project after finding funding difficulties just weeks before groundbreaking could have taken place

Federal Heights is a small town located in Adams County, Colorado, United States. The population was 1,047 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Denver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. Federal Heights was first settled in 1876 by men who were seeking to escape slavery in Georgia. The town name comes from the fact that most of the land where Federal Heights now stands was donated to the federal government by local citizens in order to create a national park honoring American servicemen and women who had served during World War II. The post office opened on February 14, 1881, and remained open until it closed on December 15, 1959. The first store opened on Main Street and became known as the "Federal Market." A second store opened on Second Avenue in 1907 and became known as "The Golden Horseshoe." In 1912, Congress designated Federal Heights as an official community within Denver's city limits; this status has been retained ever since. In 1915, a school was built east of Main Street and named for General George Custer (1863-1939). During World War I (1914-1918), Federal Heights played an important role as a military depot; many of the soldiers who fought in that war lived here before moving on to other towns or cities. In 1949, when Interstate 70 was built through Adams County, Federal Heights saw its biggest boom yet; many people decided to move here because of the new highway's promise of easy access to all kinds of shopping and recreational opportunities outside of Denver. However, over time some residents beganto resent how their community had changed so much since they left it back in 1949. This resentment quickly transformed into violence which erupted into what is still one of District 2's most notorious crimes: The 1992 Presidential Inauguration Massacre. On November 5th & 6thof that year several members of a paramilitary group calling themselves "The Black Knights" descended upon Federal Heights after learning about plans for Congressional candidate Glen Campbell to hold an election rally thereon those days (Mr Campbell won handily). Thereafter sporadic gunfire continued throughout that night between various factions vying for control over what should have been an event free from violence
