The first post office opened in 1890; Federal Heights incorporated as a town in 1912. The economy of Federal Heights has been based largely on agriculture since the early days of its establishment. Today, however, Federal Heights contains several small businesses that serve the community as well as a few large companies such as PepsiCo and MeadWestvaco Incorporated. Federal Heights is located about east of Denver and west of Aurora on I-20 east of US Highway 287 (the modern alignment of US Highway 27). It is bordered by Northglenn to the north, Thornton to the south, Aurora to the east, Lakewood Ranch to the west and Centennial Village to the northwest.

In 1902, the post office was moved from Aurora to Federal Heights and it remained there until 1959 when it became part of Greeley. On July 11, 1912, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which authorized the erection of Fort George Sill within Federal Heights limits as a military installation for self-defense against potential hostile actions by Mexico or other Central American countries. The fort was completed in 1914 and served as an artillery battery until its closure in 1978 due to budgetary cuts. Today there are few reminders of what once flourished here – only a few small businesses and a couple of homes left standing from when Federal Heights was one of the most vibrant communities in Weld County during its peak years around 1930s and 1940s; however this community has experienced many transformations over time including becoming one of America’s densest inner city neighborhoods thanks to waves of immigration that have brought new life into Federal Heights since World War II; gentrification has occurred with mixed results throughout recent decades culminating with a current period characterized by increasing commercial vacancy across much portions of Federal Heights resulting in declining levels off housing prices; nevertheless Despite these challenges and some signs that things may be changing for the worse (such as signaled increases in crime rates), overall it remains an interesting place to live – despite today’s less than enviable history
