The first white people to live on Federal Heights were the McKenzies, who arrived in 1876. In 1907, the city of Denver purchased 640 acres of land at what is now Federal Hill for $10,000. The city built a small park on the site and named it Federal Hill Park. In 1916, Congress passed the National Defense Authorization Act which provided for the construction of a national military cemetery on Federal Hill. The United States Military Cemetery Administration was created in 1917 and began to build the cemetery. The final phase of construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1924. The cemetery contains 4,500 gravesites of American soldiers killed during World War I and World War II.
