It is part of the Grand Junction–Aurora, CO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was named after General George Washington (1732-1813), who had been commandant of Fort Leavenworth and Battle of Saratoga before being appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army in 1776. The town began to form around 1876 when a post office called "Fort Leavenworth" was established near what is now Federal Heights Boulevard. In 1886, a railroad station was built there and called "Washington." The name changed to "Federal Heights" in 1912 when the main line from Denver to Aurora were routed through Federal Heights. The Post Office at Federal Heights served as an important transportation hub for residents and businesses in the early days ofFederal Hills development. By 1916, when Interstate 70 reached Federal Heights via Ute Pass, it had become one of the most heavily populated areas outside of Denver/Boulder metropolitan areas.
