The two towns were annexed byDenver on December 1, 1912. In 1916, federal troops burned down a theater here during World War I as part of OperationCrossroads to bury German soldiers captured during the campaign. In 1920 an electric power plant began operations here; it became operational until 1988 when it was replaced by a natural gas plant. The current shopping center opened in 1984 adjacent to Interstate 70/Upper Glencoe Rd., north of downtown Federal Heights (the old company store). In 1990 construction began on what would become one of Denver's most iconic boulevards: Cherry Hill Dr., running east-west through Federal Heights before terminating at I-70 just south of Aurora Boulevard near Golden Triangle Mall (now Arvest Fair Shopping Center). Today Federally Heights remains largely agricultural with some light industry including a few grocery stores and professional offices; however residential development has grown steadily throughout recent years including several high-rise buildings along Cherry Hill Dr.; much of this is currently occupied by federal workers who make up about 60% of the population

In recent years, Federal Heights has become a largely residential community with few commercial enterprises or services available to its residents. Its location near I-25 and Interstate 70 makes it an attractive spot for commuters heading east or west into Denver or other nearby cities; but also its low population density means that most people remain relatively isolated from each other within their own communities. The percentage of married couples without children decreases as one moves away from Federal Heights: from 78% among those living in ZIP Code 80534 to 66% among those living in ZIP Code 80920 over 5 miles (8 km). In contrast, percent single women increases significantly (>100%) within just a few blocks of where they live (<50%).

In 1876, the first post office on Federal Heights opened. The population of Federal Heights was only 6 people in 1876. In 1893, a school was established on Federal Heights and it remained in operation until 1925. In 1924, the Colorado Territorial Legislature passed an act recognizing the town of Federal Heights as a municipality within the State of Colorado. The town charter was published and ratified by referendum in 1926. The post office moved to its current location on Main Street in 1957; when it became an annex to the Denver Post Office Building. On July 1, 1987, the town ofFederal Heights merged with neighboring Thornton to form a new city called Thornton which had a population of over 110,000 residents at that time.
