EARLY BEGINNINGS The first human beings to inhabit what is now Fort Morgan were Paiute Native Americans who lived there from around AD 1000 until about AD 1400. The area that now includes Fort Morgan was part of Rancho El Paso de Alameda y Mena (Rancho El Paso et al.) land grants given to ranch hands byMexican president Vicente Guerrero in 1847. The grantees consisted of 36 men: 11 farmers, 17 ranchers, 7 soldiers, 6 interpreters, 5 engineers, and 2 scientists named José Antonio Gutiérrez de la Torre y Ruiz y Castilla (Jóvenes Hacienda) and Francisco Moreno Vallejo (Minería). In 1861, however, when Colorado entered into statehood, all land within 1 mile of Denver had to be sold or leased to the state for $3 per acre ($36 per hectare). This measure provided much needed money for infrastructure projects such as roads and schools acrossColorado’s newly acquired territory! In 1862 Major General John Custer made his way down from Kansas City with 3 companies of cavalry under his command to take possession of Coyote Gulch near today’s Durango/Alamosa County line – just east of where Fort Morgan would later stand! After being met with resistance from local residents who saw this move as another attack by redcoats on their home turf (!), Custer forced his way into town on July 20th after three days fighting! He quickly realized that he didn’t have enough troops to siege an entire town so he ordered his men back outfitting at nearby Pikes Peak Arsenal before returning north on July 25th! From here he launched an allout assault against two Mexican positions at Washita River Bridge which resulted in one Indian dead and several captured! Lt Col George Armstrong Custer then relieved Custer at Fort Donelson five miles north overland from today’s Alamosa County Line! With these victories under your belt you are ready for something more complicated !!! But noGeneral wanted more than California!! So instead we got Bear Creek Ravine just outside our current borders!!!! And guess what? We still don’t know exactly how many people live within 10 miles or so Of us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As someone who has been living here since BEFORE ANY OF THIS WAS EVER SETTLED DOWN I can tell you without question that there ARE FAR MORE PEOPLE LOCATED NEAR FORT MORGAN THAN ANYBODY EVEN THINKS THEY KNOW ABOUT!!!!!!!!!!!!! Well actually maybe not quite THATmany…but close enough !!!!! Anyway lets get back onto topic shall we? !!!!!!!!!
