Kearny's objective was to stop Mexican forces from entering New Mexico and invading California. On July 14, 1814, Kearny's force attacked Mexican positions at Trinidad; however, Mexican General Antonio López de Santa Anna withdrew his army before they could be joined by reinforcements from Mexico City. Santa Anna then moved his army northeastward along the Rio Grande towards Denver while Kearny returned to Trinidad and reported his success to Kearny's superiors in Washington D.C.. Fort Morgan was built on land donated by local ranchers between1824 and 1830 as part of a system known as Rancho Buenavista del Norte (Rancho Bravo). The fortification of Fort Morgan began under President James Knoedler in 1850 and was completed under Brigadier General George Armstrong Custer during October 1862 following a siege by Kiowa Indians. During World War II, Fort Morgan served as an airfield for American bombers attacking targets within Japan; it also housed Japanese prisoners-of-war who were held until 1945 when they were liberated by United States Forces
