The Fruita Community School District was created in 1954 when Fruita Consolidated School District #4 merged with other districts in Moffat County to form the newly created Moffat County School District #1. Today, there are nine elementary schools (grades K-5) and one high school (grades 8-12). Along with the Sawmill Dam Reservoir Recreation Area, Fruita offers a wide variety of recreational opportunities such as fishing, hunting, boating and hiking/mountain biking. Fruita is also home to several businesses including two grocery stores (Grocery Outlet Inc., founded 1922; Stop & Shop Inc., founded 1958), two gas stations (KFC Corp./PepsiCo., 1956; convenience store Chevron Resources Co./Eagle National Bank 1984), three churches (First Baptist Church 1980s; Methodist Church 1966; Presbyterian Church 1930s), two restaurants (Burger King 1950s-present; Pizza Hut 1959-present), three bars/pubs (?, these closed circa 2000) and four banks (!date unknown).
Fruita was founded in 1871 by George and Nancie Durant. TheDurants were a wagon train pioneers who traversed the Rocky Mountains from Colorado to Utah. They named their new town Fruita after the fruit they would soon be harvesting. The Durants started a post office in 1870 and began selling goods at the local store. In 1881, they built a sawmill which became one of the largest in Fruita. The Durants also opened a grocery store, which continued to be operated until 1951. Between 1850 and 1860, there were only 6 residents living in Fruita. By 1902, there were over 100 residents living in Fruita. Development of the town began to increase during World War II when the U.S military requisitioned land for storage near the mill.]
