Golden, Colorado is home to the oldest continuously operating ammunition plant in the United States. The facility was opened in 1903 and has produced ammunition for every U.S. military service since then. Ammunition production at Golden began with powder from Trapdoor Mines in eastern Colorado and continued until 1912 when the company switched to black powder. In 1930, Golden merged with Remington Arms Company and production shifted to Remington's new factory in Erie, Pennsylvania. From 1951-1978, Golden also produced munitions for NATO under license from General Dynamics Corporation. Since 1978, Golden has been a subsidiary of ATK Americas Inc., which also manufactures firearms and artillery products across North America. In 1903, when Golden Ammo was founded, rifle ammunition was the only type of munitions that could be bought on site because there wasn't yet a government monopoly on manufacturing arms (the shotgun market would come into being later). At that time, rifles were still just becoming popular so manufacturers didn't want their products competing against each other or else they might lose customers who wanted something different than what they had available right then. Ammunition producer George Naylor decided to produce his own rifle rounds instead of simply importing rounds from others because he knew how important it was for himself and his company to be able to offer their own product as well as compete fairly against those from other companies who may have had an advantage over them at that time. The first batch of rifle rounds designed by Naylor were called "Naylor Rounds". These were created specifically for the Springfield Armory Rifle Model 1892 (which is now known as the Ruger Mini-14), which wasn't even released until 1902! The round itself consisted of a copper core surrounded by lead shot; this allowed it to travel long distances without tearowing due to its high velocity and low weight (~1/2 pound compared to modern ammo). However due to its rarity these rounds did not sell very well so Naylor went back to using trapdoor mining powder which he had been using before but hadn't made much progress with due lack of resources at the time (although he did eventually patent his invention)). From 1903-1912 there were several revisions made to Naylor Rounds including: #3a - This revision featured a new projectile design called the "Trapdoor" which traveled further than any other existing rounds while still having low weight due to its small size; #5b - A variation that used nitroglycerine instead of lead shot; #6c - A more powerful version featuring a larger copper core surrounded by smaller lead shot pellets; finally #7d – A redesign featuring a redesigned projectile known as "The Beast" which became infamous for its high speed and destructive force when fired! ? By 1889 three men were operating a successful mill here grinding flour from local sandstone using a hand grinder; also this year saw construction begin on what would eventually become Central High School (now Academy Elementary School) next door to Miller’s mill across Highway 20A from where Main Street now ends just west of Haskell Road/Route 66 intersection west of Interstate 25 exit #2B off I-25 Exit ramp #5A onto I-25 shortly thereafter becoming Recreation District No 2 developmentally known as “Downtown Golden” while operations continued at Miller Gulch whereupon Millers son Charles AMission began building what would become county seat buildings including courthouse annexe circa 1890 – erected 1909 then razed 1968 after years as home rule charter city but returned as county seat following consolidation with Alamosa & Pueblo
