Lafayette is a small town in Weld County, Colorado. The population was 1,662 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Collins–Aurora Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Lafayette was Juan Rodriguez de Montoya on July 4, 1541. He named it after François de Lafayette, general and commander of the French army in Spain during the Mexican War of Independence. Lafayette grew rapidly as a result of its location along the Arkansas River and its access to gold and silver mines. In 1859, Lafayette became an incorporated town when it was annexed by Fort Collins. In 1872, Congress passed legislation annexing Pueblo County to Colorado; Lafayette chose not to become part of Pueblo because it did not want its residents to be forced out by Denver's annexation into that city. Lafayette continued to grow rapidly until it reached its current size in 1910 with a population of 1,662 people. Since then, there have been few major changes to the town's demographics or infrastructure; most notable exceptions are the growth in ranching and agriculture over the past several decades which has led to increased traffic congestion on Main Street and other streets in downtown Lafayette. One recent development has been a new high school located adjacent to what used to be a local grocery store; although this project has met some opposition from community members who feel that this type of development would create more traffic congestion than necessary in an already struggling townspeople are slowly starting To see positive aspects about this new school- such as helping improve air quality in downtown area
