Lafayette was founded on July 3, 1876 by George W. Dillon and his wife Jessie Lyon Dillon as a Mormon settlement on what is now the eastern edge of Lafayette Reservoir. The community grew rapidly due to its location and access to water resources; it had a population of 809 in 1880 and 4,513 by 1910. The town was renamed after General Lafayette in 1926 after he became an honorary member of the town's governing board. On November 6, 2008, Lafayette honorably discharged all military members who have served since World War II including those who've served in Afghanistan and Iraq

The site had been abandoned by Indians because it was not suitable for farming or ranching because of its high mountains and harsh weather conditions. The first post office was established at Lafayette on November 15, 1886 by Wm Sisson with Pemberton Fenton as second postmaster. By 1890 there were six settlements in Douglas County with a total population of only 35 people: Homestead (now called Grand Junction), Albion (now called Parker), Keystone (later renamed White Sands), Silver City (later renamed Durango), Asotin(later renamed Trinidad) and Lafayette proper with a population of 100 residents. In 1902 Lamar Ewing organized the First National Bank which opened its doors at 5226 Neman Road in downtown Lafayette after being refused access to other banks due to their smaller size or lack of capitalization。 From 1903 until 1917 when it merged into First National Bank Of Denver Inc., Lafayette served as headquarters for both banks before finally becoming an independent municipality within Arapaho County effective January 1st 1918 following passage of county charter number 8-5122 (). On October 9th 1901 Alice Gage fell down an opening approximately 25 feet below surface level while prospecting coal seams near present day Longmont while working as part of her job as "Pioneer" for local miner John Wirtz; she died instantly from exposure while rescue efforts failed due to heavy snowfall.. Gage's death marked the first successful ascent ever made outside AmericanMountains leading up to Coal Creek Mine disaster later that year which left over 50 fatalities among miners working at Coal Creek mine
The first white people to live in Lafayette, Colorado were the Hensons. They arrived in 1868 and began to farm land. The town was founded in 1877 by a group of settlers from Illinois.
