Northglenn, Colorado is located in the Rocky Mountains of western Colorado and forms part of the Denver-Aurora metropolitan area. The population was 57,611 at the 2010 census. Northglenn is a small town that straddles both sides of the National River, which forms its eastern border. To the east, it overlooks Mesa Verde National Park while to the west it bordered by Aspen and Thorntonwald ski resorts. Northglenn's namesake is Northglen Avenue, which runs through town and connects downtown with several other neighborhoods such as Manor Road and Highlands Ranch. The first Europeans to visit what is now Northglenn were led by Captain James Hutton in 1774 when he explored what are now Larimer County and Weld County in central Colorado during his survey of western Front Range areas for Santa Fe Trail connections. The name "North Glens" was given to this location by one of Hutton's assistants who called it "Northeast Peak" because there seemed to be no peak like that on the mountain range seen from their position within today's town limits. The first permanent settler in what is now Northglenn was John Custer who arrived in 1868 after traveling through winter encampments near present-day Aspen on his way southward along the Pikes Peak Trail. A few years later, another pioneer named Wabash arrived from Illinois Territory and set out from nearby Telluride Colony to explore northwest Colorado but died before reaching Fort Collins in 1872 or 1873 due to cold weather conditions near Aspen Valley Airport then known as Butte Creek Airport today). Wabash's group included George Armstrong Custer (1851–1937), father of American General George Armstrong Custer (1839–1920). In 1870 Wabash joined forces with local rancher David Fryer to start a cattle drive down what became known as Powder Flats about where present day Northglenn sits today (). Northglenn was incorporated on July 1, 1912. The first settler in Northglenn was John Fenton and his family who arrived from Rhode Island in 1885. They erected a cabin on what is now eastside of town. A post office called Northglenn was established in 1886, and remained open until 1911. In 1912, Northglenn became a city when it amalgamated with neighboring Aurora and Lakewood. The new city government provided for an library, fire hall, police department and other civic amenities which were not available to the original townsite residents or their predecessors. One of the most important events during Northglenn's early years occurred during the 1915 Colorado floods that destroyed much of eastern Douglas County including many homes and businesses along the Arkansas River near present day Thornton (the floodwaters reached as high as 15 feet). Many people in Northglenn abandoned their homes due to fear for their safety but soon after received relief packages containing food and supplies courtesy of the United States government through Bureau of Refugees resettlement program managed by American Committee for Relief (ACR). Thesepackages included items such as water pumps, gasoline cans and tents which helped provide temporary housing to displaced citizens across America during those difficult times
