Thornton, Colorado is located in the Rocky Mountains of Western Colorado and is part of theDenver-Aurora-Lakewood Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 7,500 at the 2000 census. Thornton is a small town with a single school, an post office, and a grocery store. The shopping center has two anchor stores: Lord & Taylor and Sears. Thornton is home to the Thornton Open Air Theatre which presents plays throughout the year. The first person to settle in Thornton was David Sorenson in 1876. He built his cabin on what is now South Main Street. In 1886, Judge John Prentice organized a township from parts of Thornton Township and founded Prentice-Thornton School District No. 1 which served students in grades one through twelve. The first real gaming hall in America was built in 1889 by J F Moorcroft for $5,000 as the Park Place Casino and Gambling Hall (now known as the Grand View Casino). The original name for this casino was "The Old Fort" because it had been used by Native Americans as their Fort Marcy duringthe buffalo hunt season. In 1912, Mrs Lillie A Sloan opened her general store at Second Avenue and North Main Street on land donated by her husband Charles H Sloan who also owned an oil refinery near Denver Airport at that time; it became known as Sloan's Supermarket until its acquisition by Kroger in 1984. In 1924, Mr Burt Reynolds set up shop at 5th Avenue/North Third Street where he manufactured cigarettes under the name "Burt Reynolds Tobacco Company." This location became known as "The Factory". On February 11 1949 Mr Wm Kline set up his final business venture when he opened Kline's Candy Stores Incorporated with locations throughout western Colorado Springs including Thornton where he later died on October 25 1960 aged 71 years old after operating Klines candy stores since 1947 through Mayflower Markets Incorporated.. At that time there were over 100 businesses operating within 500 feet of each other! Today there are only 10 businesses left within 500 feet of each other! On July 4 1925 local residentsorganized themselves into a fire department when they heard about problems experienced by people living beyond city limits such as those living around Big Creek Reservoir east of town (then called White Mesa) who were not getting water or electricity due to construction projects being undertaken nearby on Broadway Boulevard between County Road 9054 (later Ute Pass Road) and County Road 9528 (later I-25). That same year it was decided that all fires should be reported to Sheriff Harry Judd so that appropriate measures could be taken including setting off warning signals if needed to get people out of their homes before any injuries occurred; this proved effective when on September 15 1925 a property belonging to Ethel Waters adjoining Big Creek Reservoir caught fire resulting in 3 deaths (the only fatalities until 1985 when an automobile dealership caught fire killing four people), $2 million damage ($100 million today), and 50% loss644 jobs!

The town began to grow rapidly thanks to its strategic location as a crossroads betweenDenver and Fort Collins. In 1875, the state legislature passed an act granting Thornton city status and making it one of the twenty-four cities in Colorado that were granted this honor. The City Council enacted an ordinance providing for streetlights, fire hydrants, public baths, and other community amenities which helped make Thornton a successful city from its early days until annexation by Denver in 1902. Today’s downtown area is home to many businesses including several banks and restaurants as well as government officials such as the Mayor of Thornton and members of the City Council who are responsible for managing all aspects of their community including infrastructure planning, zoning issues/modifications/, economic development / enterprise development/, social services / housing / recreational activities/, etc.
