This land sat at the intersection of State Road 6 and Hartford Avenue (then called Northampton Street) and soon became one of Danbury's most popular tourist spots for visitors from all over New England. In addition to hosting concerts and other events, The Meadows also served as an ideal location for running a small grocery store and tavern which remain active to this day; these days known as The Tavern on Main Street. A local landmark still standing from those early days is Eastgate House which stood across Elmira Road from The Meadows until 1978 when it was destroyed by fire during a summertime open house celebration for schoolchildren attending Danbury High School nearby.
