Danbury is a town in Connecticut, United States. The population was 18,746 at the 2010 census. In 1824, it became part of the newly formed Hartford County. It was annexed by Danbury in 1881. The first permanent settler in what is now Danbury was Nicholas Ayer in 1640. He and his family were among the first to arrive on the site that would become Danbury. Ayer built a small cabin near where he lived for the next few years before moving to a more permanent location some miles away. In 1702, Colonel George Washington decided to establish himself as an American commander after defeating King William at Mount Vernon. He named his new settlement "Newtown" after himself and ordered Captain Samuel Untermeyer to lead a party of settlers from New England into this area which had been vacated by the British troops who had retreated there during the war. Untermeyer found many suitable land sites in this vicinity and developed one of these into what is now known as "Untermeyer's Hill". In 1800, John Morse purchased some additional land northwest of Untermeyer's Hill from Captains Untermeyer and Greenough for $1 per acre (including water rights). This enabled him to develop what is now known as Morse Heights which became one of Danbury's most important shopping areas during its early years." Morse also established a mill on Beaver Creek which soon began producing flour for local markets and export opportunities around Connecticut." Morse sold his mill property in 1903 to John Fenton who operated it until 1953 when it was acquired by Wellcome Group Limited."
Danbury was founded in 1764 as a small hamlet on the edge of the Connecticut River. At its peak, Danbury had a population of about 10,000 people and was one of the most important commercial and political centers in New England. The town experienced prosperity during its early years, thanks to its location at the head of navigation on the river and because it became an important port for shipping goods to eastern markets. However, by 1815 Danbury was struggling financially and lost much of its economic power due to increased competition from other towns along the river. In 1828, however, Mayor John Paine sponsored a plan to build a new courthouse and park in downtown Danbury. This project helped to revive the town's economy and make it one of the most prosperous cities in New England. Today, Danbury is still a major cultural and commercial center in northeastern Connecticut. It is home to several large businesses such as GEICO Insurance Company and Wojcicki Paper Co., as well as many smaller businesses including TheDanbury News Journal and The Newtowne Press. In addition, there are several museums located within or nearby Danbury proper, including Museum Of Fine Arts And History (Museum Of American Art) and Brown University's Department Of Anthropology And Ethnography (Brown University Museum).
