The original downtown area quickly became known as "the heart of town." Today much of that Downtown core has been preserved as part of Historic District No. 5 on Main Street between State and Elm Streets; while swathes of other buildings have been replaced or updated since then including many schools which are still used today such as Holy Cross HS., Stuyvesant HS., Webster HS., Hebrew cohort/Jewish Day School etcetera
